BU wrestling drops East Stroudsburg 32-6 to set wins record
Bearcats (16-6) finish season with highest win percentage in 30 years

VESTAL, N.Y. -- On Senior Night, Binghamton wrestling (16-6) celebrated from start to finish with a 32-6 win over visiting East Stroudsburg, Friday night at West Gym. The victory, BU's fifth straight, was the team's 16th on the season, breaking the old record for wins in a season set by the Division III squad in 1974-75. The Bearcats' season win percentage of 73 percent is also the highest in 30 years, since the 1979-80 team went 9-2 (82%).

The Bearcats won eight of the 10 bouts, including a pin and two major decisions.

Sophomore 11th-ranked 149-pounder Donnie Vinson provided the pin - turning Tyler Wilton in the first period. Vinson led 11-3 before ending the match in 1:52. He finished his dual season with a 21-1 record - the highest dual win percentage (95.5%) in the program's nine-year Division I era. His 84 team points in duals is the third-most since 2001. Vinson is 24-3 overall this season.

Junior 157-pound Matt Kaylor and junior 165-pound Justin Lister followed with convincing major decisions - each narrowly missing out on a pin or tech fall. Kaylor rolled to a 19-7 win and Lister racked up six back points en route to a 16-2 triumph. In the final dual matches of their standout careers, senior 141-pound Anwar Goeres and senior 174-pound Ryan McGarity eached earned a decision.

"I thought the guys wrestled extremely well tonight," head coach Pat Popolizio said. "The last two matches have been our best of the year, in terms of the style of aggressive wrestling, completing matches and scoring late. That's the kind of wrestling we need to see this time of year.

"I thought Justin (Lister) was extremely aggressive, as was Donnie (Vinson)," Popolizio said. "Our guys showed their experience tonight. For Senior Night, Ryan (McGarity) and Anwar (Goeres) wrestled well and even though Matt (Berretta) came up short, it was nice to have him in the lineup. We need to continue this improvement and use it toward the conference tournament and NCAAs."

Binghamton now prepares to defend its team title at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, held March 4-6 at Rider University.

That 1974-75 team (15-3) placed fifth at the NCAA Division III Championship... former national runnerup and BU Hall of Famer Tim Borshoff, a member of that squad, was in attendance.
