BU wrestling picks up two wins over Hofstra and Columbia
Bearcats defeat eight-time CAA champion Hofstra for first time since 1975

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestling (13-6-1) picked up two dual wins on Saturday afternoon at West Gym. The Bearcats defeated Hofstra 28-8 and also knocked off Columbia 30-14.

The victory over Hofstra, the eight-time defending CAA champions, snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to 1975.

"The Hofstra dual win was a huge victory for us," head coach Pat Popolizio said. "We haven't beaten them in 35 years and they have been dominating our conference. For us to dominate them the way we did is very rewarding for our guys."

Freshman 149-pound Donnie Vinson picked up a technical fall against Hofstra and sophomore 157-pound Justin Lister upset 16th-ranked Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, 10-8 to give BU critical match points.

Senior 174-pound Josh Patterson, ranked 13th in the country, continued his dominance with a technical fall over Hofstra and freshman 184-pound Nate Schiedel secrued the win with a pin at 3:09 over the CAA's top-ranked wrestler at the weight in Ben Clymer.

Junior heavyweight Corey Waite and freshman 125-pound James Inghram also picked up decisions for Binghamton in the win over Hofstra.

After losing a major decision at 125, BU went on to win the next seven matches over Columbia to take a 30-4 lead.

Junior 133-pound Tyler Malmberg earned a pin over Columbia's Andrew Grabfelder in 2:52 before junior 141-pound Anwar Goeres pinned Ryan Doyle in 1:18 .

Vinson won twice on the day improving to 28-10 on the season, as did Goeres, who is now 30-7. Patterson picked up a major decision over Columbia to push his record to 22-5.

Lister continued his outstanding day with a major decision over Columbia's Matt Dunn. Lister increases his overall mark on the season to 24-7.

Binghamton next wrestles at East Stroudsburg on Thursday.
