Release: September 26, 2007
VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton University wrestling can't be accused of soft scheduling. The Bearcats will open their 2007-08 season with a dual match against 2007 NCAA runnerup Iowa State on November 18 at the West Gym. The match against the eight-time NCAA champion Cyclones is part of the Journeymen/Worldwide Sprawl & Brawl, which will also feature West Virginia and Clarion. The Bearcats will take on Iowa State at 11:30 a.m.
"They might have the best team in the country," BU head coach Pat Popolizio said. "To have them come into our backyard is great for this area and for our local wrestling community."
The Bearcats begin their season one day earlier at the Cornell Body Bar Tournament. Popolizio returns eight of 10 starters and 14 letterwinners from a young team that won 10 matches last winter. Highlighting the group are sophomore 174-pound Josh Patterson (Ontario, N.Y.), junior 157-pound Nate Patterson (Ontario, N.Y.) and senior 149-pound Kyle Fried (Rock Hill, N.Y.).
Patterson (Josh) was a CAA all-rookie selection who advanced to the NCAA Championship in his freshman campaign. He won a team-best 27 matches. Older brother Nate was 15-5 in duals with a team-high 11 pins. Fried was nationally-ranked for much of the season and narrowly missed an NCAA bid after going 4-1 and placing third at the CAA Championship.
The Bearcats will compete in five tournaments in addition to a minimum of 16 duals. The CAA Championship will be held March 7-8 at Hofstra, with the top finishers advancing to the NCAA Championship, held March 20-22 in St. Louis.
