Binghamton wrestling falls to Iowa State 30-15
Bearcats win two matches against ranked opponents

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton lost to No. 2 Iowa State 30-15 Sunday afternoon in front of 900 fans at the West Gym. Binghamton was the host for the five-team Journeyman Sprawl and Brawl dual event that also featured West Virginia, Sacred Heart and Clarion.

Binghamton sophomore 141-pound Anwar Goeres (Holley, N.Y.) pinned Nick Gallick in 1:54 in to earn the Bearcats' first team points of the match. Goeres had two takedowns and an escape before pinning Gillick, who is ranked 14th in the nation.

Senior 149-pound Kyle Fried (Rock Hill, N.Y.) used a takedown in sudden death overtime to defeat No. 14 Mitch Mueller 6-4.

Binghamton took a 9-6 lead in the match with Fried's victory and pushed it to 15-6 after an Iowa State forfeit at 157. The Cyclones then won the next five matches to claim the victory.

"This was a great dual meet for our guys ... they really competed well," second year coach Pat Popolizio said. "The whole atmosphere was great. It was a huge statement for us to get a couple of individual wins against a ranked opponent."

Iowa State is the defending Big 12 champions and national runnerup.

Binghamton will next compete at the Northeast Duals November 25 in Albany.
