Binghamton
wrestling sweeps Sacred Heart 23-20 and James Madison 33-12
Patterson
brothers combine for five wins, including two pins and three
major decisions
VESTAL,
N.Y.-- Following a two-week layoff, Binghamton wrestling (8-9)
resumed its schedule by sweeping a pair of matches Saturday afternoon,
defeating James Madison (6-23, 1-8 CAA) by a score of 33-12 in
the day's first match and topped Sacred Heart (5-7, 4-5 CAA)
23-20 in the night cap. The win over the Pioneers avenges an
earlier 29-19 defeat by Sacred Heart on January 7.
Against James Madison, Binghamton junior heavyweight Mike
Patterson opened with an 11-0 major decision over senior
Zack Winfrey before the Dukes posted three consecutive wins to
take a 12-4 lead. From there, the Bearcats dominated the rest
of the match as they won the final six bouts, including back-to-back
pins by junior Kyle Fried (1:32) at
149 pounds and sophomore Nate Patterson
(2:16) at 157 pounds. Sophomore Sam Sirota
also recorded a 13-4 major decision at 165 pounds while freshman
Josh Patterson posted a 12-2 major
decision at 184 pounds.
Sacred Heart opened the second match by jumping out to a 13-6
lead behind a technical fall, major decision and a close 10-9
decision before the Bearcats battled back. Following an 8-2 win
by Fried at 149 pounds, Nate Patterson put Binghamton ahead 15-13
with a pin (1:48) of sophomore Michael Hartman. The Pioneers
responded with a 5-2 victory by freshman Patrick Nappi to quickly
retake the lead 16-15 but it would be short lived.
Sirota posted a 14-5 major decision at 174 pounds to retake the
lead 19-16 before Josh Patterson registered his second major
decision of the day to put the match out of reach and secure
the 23-20 victory.
On the day, Nate Patterson posted to pins to go along with younger
brother Josh's two major decisions. Mike Patterson finished the
day with a major decision and a loss to the 19th ranked heavyweight
in the country while Fried posted his fourth pin of the year
to go along with two victories.
The Bearcats resume their schedule when they travel to Boston
for a 1 p.m. meet on February 10.
