Immediate Release: March 17, 2011 PHILADELPHIA -- Binghamton wrestling had a tough start to the NCAA Championship, Thursday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center, with only one Bearcat winning his opening match. Junior 165-pound Justin Lister, who placed fourth to earn All-America honors last year, posted a first-round win and will face No. 1 seed Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska in Thursday night's second round. Binghamton's five other wrestlers all suffered losses in their opening matches, including ninth-seeded sophomore149-pound Donnie Vinson. The five will begin the tough road back in the consolation bracket Thursday night. The night session begins at 6:30 p.m. Lister (23-6) opened with a 2-1 decision over unseeded Kyle Blevins of Appalachian State. After a scoreless first, Lister rode Blevins for most of the second before giving up a late escape. Lister then escaped to start the third and hung on for the win with 1:41 of riding time. Senior 141-pound Anwar Goeres (24-9) was tied 4-4 with sixth-seeded Andrew Alton of Penn State before Alton put him on his back and recorded the pin in 2:20. Junior 157-pound Matt Kaylor (28-10) lost a tough 5-4 decision to unseeded David Bonin of Northern Iowa in the first round. He was assertive in the first period, recording two takedowns and leading 4-1. But a Bonin escape and takedown knotted the score at 4 after one. Bonin escaped to start the second and that's the way the score ended, despite several Kaylor shots in the third period. Vinson (26-4), the No. 9 seed, lost to unseeded Coulthurst Schmitt of Wisconsin, 6-1 in the opening round. After a scoreless first period, Vinson escaped in the second and took a 1-0 lead to the third, where he started on top. But Schmitt reversed him and got three back points plus riding time to score the upset. Sophomore 184-pound Nate Schiedel (32-8) lost to No. 4 seed, Travis Rutt, of Wisconsin, 12-7, in the first round. He gave up two takedowns and back points in the first period and couldn't recover, despite a reversal and four points in the third. It was the second straight year Rutt beat Schiedel in the opening match. Senior 174-pound Ryan McGarity (30-18) fell behind 4-0 after the first period in his match with unseeded Nick Purdue of Ohio and lost 10-3. NCAA
