Binghamton wrestling wins one of three matches at Northeast Duals
Bearcats topple Princeton 36-5, fall to No. 14 Penn and Bloomsburg

GUILDERLAND CENTER, N.Y.-- Binghamton wrestling opened its dual meet schedule with a win and two losses at the Fourth Annual Journeyman Brute Northeast Duals, held Saturday at Guilderland High School. The eight-team event was organized by Frank Popolizio, brother of BU head coach Pat Popolizio, and featured four teams ranked in the nation's top-15.

Number 14 Penn defeated the Bearcats 45-0 in the opening match. Binghamton then lost to Bloomsburg 40-10 before toppling Princeton 36-5 in the final match.

In the Princeton match, BU won eight of the 10 bouts, including three by pin and another by technical fall. Freshman Kareem Naguib (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored a fall in 1:10 at 133 pounds, as did freshman Josh Patterson (Ontario, N.Y.) at 184 (in 2:47) and freshman Ed Backus (Mohawk, N.Y.) up at heawyweight (in 5:41). Freshman Mike Kleeman (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) rolled to a 19-3 technical fall at 125 pounds to put the Bearcats on their way.

Backus posted his second pin of the day against Bloomsburg, needing just 51 seconds to end his match at 197 pounds against Eric Shaw. Patterson picked up BU's other win against the Huskies, scoring a 15-0 technical fall at 174 pounds.

Binghatmon next competes at Bucknell on December 2.
