Bearcats finish 5th of 17 at New York State Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y.--At the annual New York State Championships, Binghamton advanced two wrestlers to the championship bout of their weight class and finished in fifth place in the team standings with 91 points. Host Buffalo finished with 178.5 points to hold off Army and win their first team title since 1978. Columbia and Nassau County Community College rounded out the top five. Senior Joe Privitere (Johnson City, N.Y.) advanced to the finals at 157, and junior Jerome Joe (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) wrestled for the championship at 184 despite competing in just his second competition of the season.

Privitere went 3-0 to advance to the championship bout. The top seed in the weight class, Privitere opened competition by pinning his RIT opponent in just 2:40. He then scored a 9-0 major decision over an opponent from Nassau. In the semifinals, he scored a 9-6 win over the tournament's fourth seed from Columbia. In the finals, Privitere matched up with #2 seed Jeremy Conner from Army, and was defeated 8-1. Privitere ran his career record to 90-32 overall and is 8-2 this season.

In just his second competition of the season, Joe advanced to the championship bout at 184 with a pair of convincing wins on either end of a close battle. In his first bout, Joe scored a 14-3 major decision over his Oswego foe. In the second round, Joe matched up with an Ithaca wrestler that had defeated the #6 seed in his first match. Joe advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 win over his Ithaca opponent, and then looked strong in picking up his second major decision, a 12-2 triumph over the #7 seed from Oneonta. Joe, the #3 seed, matched up with the top-seeded wrestler from Buffalo in the title bout, and lost a 12-4 decision. In his two competitions this season, Joe sports a 6-1 record.

Sophomore Josh Ruff (Bainbridge, N.Y.) won four bouts at 141 and wound up with a third-place finish. Ruff won all but one match, losing only to the #2 seed and eventual second-place finisher. Ruff was the #3 seed and opened with a pair of convincing wins. In the first round, Ruff picked up a technical fall with a 22-6 score against an opponent from Columbia. Matched with the #6 seed in his second bout, Ruff easily advanced with a 7-1 win. After dropping a narrow 3-2 decision to the #2 seed from Nassau, Ruff scored back-to-back wins over the #4 and #5 seeds to garner third place. He defeated the #4 seed from Nassau 2-1 and then racked up a major decision, 10-2, over the #5 seed from Buffalo in the third-place bout. Ruff is a team-best 15-5 this season and improves to 33-10 in his career at Binghamton.

Sophomore Joe Gartiser (Tuxedo, N.Y.) went 3-3 at 149, and finished sixth in the weight class. Gartiser tallied two pins and a major decision for his three wins, and lost only to the #3 and #5 seeds. Two of Gartiser's wins were against the #6 seed and the #7 seed, respectively. He has a team-high six pins this season. At 174, junior Jeff McAveney (New Fairfield, Conn.) won three matches to advance to a bout for fifth place. He won that bout by medical forfeit. McAveney defeated the #7 and #9 seeds along the way to reaching the fifth-place bout, and his only two losses were to the #3 and #4 seeds.
