Final Brackets

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestling crowned two champions and eight placewinners at the New York State Intercollegiate Championship, held Saturday and Sunday at Cornell's Newman Arena. Competing without top wrestlers Josh Patterson and Donnie Vinson, the Bearcats placed fourth as a team with 143.5 points. Cornell won the 18-team event with 194 points, followed by Army (158), Buffalo (149.5), Binghamton and Ithaca (106) in the top five.

Sophomore 157-pound Justin Lister and freshman 184-pound Nate Schiedel won individual crowns - the first BU state champions since former NCAA qualifier Craig Tefft took the heavyweight crown in 2002.

Lister, the top seed, went 4-0 with two pins and two major decisions. He handled the fourth seed from Army, 14-1 in the semifinals before pinning teammate Ryan McGarity in 1:16 in the title bout. Lister improved to 20-6 on the season while the unseeded McGarity went 4-1 in a strong showing.

Schiedel was the No. 2 seed and rolled to four wins and his first collegiate title. He earned a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. Schiedel bounced top-seeded Nate Holley of Cornell, 17-3, in the finals. He raised his overall record to 19-6.

Junior 141-pound Anwar Goeres and junior heavyweight Corey Waite were each No. 1 seeds and runnersup. Goeres won three matches - two by pin, before suffering a 7-5 sudden victory defeat against second-seeded Casey Thome of Army in the final. He is 27-6 overall. Waite also went 3-1. He lost a narrow 3-2 decision to second-seeded Taylor Moore of Cornell in the championship.

Sophomore 165-pound Matt Kaylor went 5-1 with a pin and a major decision to place third. Kaylor lost a 6-4 sudden victory decision to eventual champion John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo in the semifinals.

Binghamton hosts American at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the West Gym.
