ITHACA, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestling crowned two champions and eight placewinners at the New York State Intercollegiate Championship, held Saturday and Sunday at Cornell's Newman Arena. Competing without top wrestlers Josh Patterson and Donnie Vinson, the Bearcats placed fourth as a team with 143.5 points. Cornell won the 18-team event with 194 points, followed by Army (158), Buffalo (149.5), Binghamton and Ithaca (106) in the top five.
Lister, the top seed, went 4-0 with two pins and two major decisions. He handled the fourth seed from Army, 14-1 in the semifinals before pinning teammate Ryan McGarity in 1:16 in the title bout. Lister improved to 20-6 on the season while the unseeded McGarity went 4-1 in a strong showing.
Schiedel was the No. 2 seed and rolled to four wins and his first collegiate title. He earned a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. Schiedel bounced top-seeded Nate Holley of Cornell, 17-3, in the finals. He raised his overall record to 19-6.
141-pound Anwar Goeres and junior heavyweight
Corey Waite were each No. 1 seeds and
runnersup. Goeres won three matches - two by pin, before suffering
a 7-5 sudden victory defeat against second-seeded Casey Thome
of Army in the final. He is 27-6 overall. Waite also went 3-1.
He lost a narrow 3-2 decision to second-seeded Taylor Moore of
Cornell in the championship.
Binghamton hosts American at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the West Gym.
