BU set to host 42nd Annual NYS Wrestling Championship this weekend
19 teams expected to compete in two-day event at West Gym

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton University will serve as host for the 42nd Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships, fueled by WWSport.com and Asics, this Saturday and Sunday at West Gym. A total of 19 Division I, III and junior college programs are expected to compete in the event, where a team champion and 10 weight class champions will be crowned.

The Bearcats and defending champion and national No. 1 Cornell head the list of participating schools. Other Division I programs include Hofstra, Buffalo and Army along with nationally-ranked Division III programs Ithaca, Cortland and Brockport.

Binghamton, which placed fourth at the 2010 event hosted by Cornell, returns two champions - Justin Lister (157) and Nate Schiedel (184). This is the fifth time BU has hosted the event (1970, 1984, 1999, 2000).

"We are proud to host this special event," Interim Director of Athletics Jim Norris said. "Our staff has worked very hard to ensure that the student-athletes, coaches, families and fans have a first-class experience. The West Gym is an optimum setting for such a large-scale event and we are looking forward to two days of outstanding wrestling."

Registration and a seeding meeting open the schedule Friday night. The action begins on six mats at 10 a.m. Saturday with junior varsity and varsity brackets. The championship continues Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The finals and placement matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the concluding awards ceremony slated for 3 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for a day and $25 for the entire championship. Doors open at 9 a.m. each day.

Under fifth-year coach Pat Popolizio, the Bearcats are 11-3 this season with three nationally-ranked wrestlers in Schiedel (10th at 184), Donnie Vinson (18th at 149) and Lister (19th at 165). The Bearcats are fresh from a perfect showing at the CAA Duals on Saturday, when BU toppled No. 25 Hofstra, beat Rider for the first time in program history and also beat Drexel.
