VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton All-American wrestler Josh Patterson has been selected as the WIN Magazine Schalles Award winner for the 2008-09 season. The award, given annually since 1999 to the best college pinner, is named after Wade Schalles, who set the college pin record at Clarion (Pa.) State where he also won two NCAA championships (1972-73).
En route to his record-breaking junior season at 184 pounds for the Bearcats, Patterson recorded 22 pins - more than any wrestler at any collegiate level. He led the entire country in wins with 46, and lost just twice in 26 dual matches. Patterson was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country before becoming the programs first Division I All-American with a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championship in St. Louis. Also a conference champion, he won five matches at NCAAs and broke school records for wins and pins in a season.
Past recipients of the Schalles Award are Darrion Caldwell, North Carolina State (2008), Ben Askren, Missouri (2006, 07), Marcus LeVesseur, Augsburg (2005), Scott Moore, Virginia (2003, 04), Cael Sanderson Iowa State (2002), Matt Petsinger, MSU-Mankato and Jared Frayer, Oklahoma (2001), Keith Blaske Ft. Hays State (2000) and Stephen Neal Cal-State Bakersfield (1999).
Patterson will carry a 95-24 overall record (55-8 duals) into his senior season for the Bearcats in 2009-10.
