VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling has two individuals in the top-six of their weight classes in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason rankings - brothers Nate and Josh Patterson.
Nate, a sophomore, is ranked third at 149 pounds behind Mark Cartella of Drexel and Mike Kessler of Rider. He placed fourth at last year's CAA Championship and won a team-best 19 matches.
"Nate is looking to improve from his accomplishments last year," first-year head coach Pat Popolizio said. "He wants to be a nationally-ranked competitor this season."
Josh, a freshman, is ranked fifth at 174 pounds. He also was selected for the All-Freshman Team, which is comprised of one wrestler at each weight class. Josh had a decorated scholastic career at Wayne Central High School. He was a two-time New York State champion and captured the senior high school national championship last winter. In his weight class, Patterson was one of the top recruits in the entire country.
"Josh had an outstanding high school career and wants to keep it rolling in college," Popolizio said. "He wants to make a statement early as a true freshman."
As a team, BU is ranked eighth out of 11 teams. Rider was number one, followed by Hofstra and Drexel in the top three spots.
Binghamton opens its season at the Navy Classic on November 18.
