Fried places fifth to lead Binghamton wrestling at the Southern Scuffle
Brockport transfer knocks off three nationally-ranked foes along the way

Final Brackets

GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Binghamton wrestling placed 25th at the 2006 Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum's Special Events Center.

Leading the way was junior 149-pound Kyle Fried (Rockhill, N.Y.), who went 7-2 to claim fifth place. Fried shook off an opening-round defeat to the twelfth seed and steamrolled through the consolation bracket. Fried won seven matches, including six in a row, and along the way, knocked off three nationally-ranked wrestlers. In succession, he posted an 8-5 decision over No. 14 Scott Ervin of Appalachian State and a 8-4 decision over No. 16 John Cox of Navy. After a loss to the eventual fourth-place finisher Josh Wagner of Missouri, Fried came up with a pin (at 6:30) against No. 13 Aaron Martin from Chattanooga in the fifth place match.

Freshman 174-pound Josh Patterson (Ontario, N.Y.) put a scare into the nation's eighth-ranked wrestler, Gabe Dretsch of Minnesota, before bowing 9-7 in overtime in his opening match. Patterson then had to withdraw from the tournament with an ankle injury sustained at the end of the bout.

Binghamton returns to its dual meet schedule with an away contest at Sacred Heart on January 7.
