VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton wrestler Donnie Vinson is enjoying an outstanding spring on the FILA amateur wrestling circuit.
The Bearcats' redshirt freshman recently captured the 145.5-pound title at the 2009 FILA Junior World Greco-Roman Team Trials, held at the U.S. Olympic training Center on May 22 in Colorado Springs. Vinson, already the FILA national champion, won both his finals bouts by technical fall over runnerup Patrick Smith. He now will represent the USA at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Ankara, Turkey on August 4-9.
Earlier in the spring, Vinson captured a national title at the University Nationals (Ages 24 and under) in Greco-Roman and finished third at the Freestyle University Nationals.
Fellow redshirt freshman Nate Schiedel took third place at the FILA Junior 20 & Under national tournament in Greco-Roman at 184.5 pounds. He also was runnerup at the University Nationals in Greco-Roman.
Junior-to-be Anthony Jerome placed fourth at both the FILA Junior 20 & Under national tournament (132.5 lbs.) and the University Nationals (138.5) in Greco-Roman.
Sophomore-to-be Justin Lister was sixth at the University Nationals in Freestyle (154 lbs.).
