Release: July 7, 2008
VESTAL, N.Y. Binghamton University released its 2008 women's soccer schedule and the 16-game slate features a nationally-televised game and eight games at the 2,534-seat Bearcats Sports Complex.
First-year coach Sarah McClellan returns five starters and 14 letterwinners, and will send her squad up against Atlantic 10 power UMass in the opener, August 24 at the Complex. The Minutewomen have won 20 games in the last two years.
After the UMass opener, BU will play three straight road games (August 29 @ LIU, August 31 @ NJIT, Sept. 7 @ Holy Cross) before returning home to play four of the next five at the Complex. Long Island won nine games in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2006. The Bearcats welcome MAAC members Iona (Sept. 12) and Rider (Sept. 17) before facing BIG EAST foe Syracuse on Sept. 21. Niagara, which won 10 games and advanced to the MAAC semifinals in 2007, travels to Vestal on Sept. 24.
The America East portion of the schedule consists of eight games - with the highlight being an October 9 home encounter with reining champion Boston University. That night match will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
"We are excited for the 2008 season to get underway," McClellan said. "We open up right away with a very strong test in UMass. Our non-conference matches will certainly prepare us for America East competition. Of course, we are elated for our home match vs. Boston to air live on Fox Soccer Channel."
Come November, the Bearcats will look to earn a top-6 spot and qualify for the America East Championship tournament for the fifth straight season.
