NEWARK, Del. - Senior forward Caitlyn Germain scored a goal and added two assists to lift host Delaware (1-0) to a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Binghamton (0-1) in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
"We need to be more effective defensively and in terms of our output," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "But we are also looking to learn from this game and now our freshman have a little bit of experience under their belt and we are looking forward to playing our next game on Sunday."
Eight freshmen made their collegiate debuts in the match for BU, including five that cracked the starting lineup.
Leigh Victory opened the scoring for the Blue Hens in the 27th minute off the feed from Germain and teammate Ali Miller benefitted from Germain's second assist at the 64:53 mark.
Two minutes later Germain netted her own unassisted goal to push Delaware's lead to 3-0.
Delaware outshot Binghamton 18-10 and UD keeper Annie Bevan saved four shots to earn the shutout.
Binghamton will return to action on Sunday at St. Joseph's.
