BU women's soccer falls to Fairfield 2-0 in season opener
Host Staggs score once in each half to remain unbeaten

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Host Fairfield (2-0) scored once in each half to pin a 2-0 loss on Binghamton women's soccer (0-1) in BU's season opener Friday night from Lessing Field.

The Staggs scored in the 39th minute from 15 yards out and added an insurance goal in the 66th minute on a header off a free kick.

“I thought it was a pretty competitive game," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "Fairfield is a quality team ... an NCAA caliber team. We got a lot of minutes from a lot of different players and we will look to build from this game. We are way ahead of where we were at this point last season and I think we will only get better each game."

Fairfield outshot BU 10-9. The Bearcats put only two shots on goal.

Freshman keeper Carrie Martin made three saves in her collegiate debut.

Junior defender Keri Iheagwara was selected as the America East Player of the Game. The newcomer came off the bench to play solid defense.

"Keri stepped up and played a great game at outside back," McClellan said. "She won her 1-v-1 battles and really lifted the level of her play tonight."

Binghamton stays in Connecticut to play at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. Sunday.
