BU women's soccer player Gormley named America East Rookie of Week
First year defender nets brilliant goal, anchors 3-0 shutout over Maine

America East release

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton women's soccer player Connie Gormley has been selected as the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced this afternoon.

Gormley, a starting center back, anchored BU's back line to a 3-0 shutout of Maine in the team's conference opener Sunday in Orono. She also netted a brilliant goal on a 45-yard direct kick midway through the second half. The goal, which pierced the upper netting on the near side, was her first collegiate tally.

"I'm really happy for Connie," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "She's working hard and is a great team player. It was a fantastic strike for her first collegiate goal."

Gormley also earned top rookie honors on August 21. She has started all nine games and has helped the Bearcats record four shutouts and rank second in the conference in goals allowed (0.56/game) and goals against average (0.54).

Binghamton (4-5, 1-0 AE) hosts undefeated Hartford (8-0-2, 1-0 AE) at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
