VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton women's soccer player Connie Gormley has been selected as the America East Rookie of the Week for the first week of the season, the conference announced this afternoon.
Gormley, a starting center back, played all 193 minutes of action over the weekend as the Bearcats split their opening two games. A former all-state defender at North Rockland High, Gormley quickly made her presence felt at the collegiate level, anchoring a BU back line that allowed just six shots and one goal in the pair of contests.
In addition to providing tight defensive pressure and marking throughout, Gormley showed off a strong right leg with booming free kicks.
She becomes the first BU player to earn conference weekly honors since sophomore teammate Kaitlyn Cook received rookie accolades last September 5.
"Obviously its a tall order for a freshman to be inserted into the center back position at this level," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "We are only two games into the season, so I anticipate Connie will continue to develop and improve each game in helping solidify our back line efforts."
Binghamton next hosts St. Joseph's at 7 p.m. Friday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
