ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Binghamton women's soccer opened its season with a 2-2 double overtime tie against Georgetown in the first round of the Navy Tournament Friday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Bearcats held a 2-1 halftime edge before the Hoyos notted the game in the 63rd minute.
"It was a back-and-forth game," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "Both teams battled hard. It was a good first game for us - a decent result. For a good run, we were pretty organized and we scored two good goals. I was pleased with the result against a tough opponent. I thought today we played pretty crisp defensively. We did some nice things and we've got some things we need to work on."
Georgetown opened the scoring in the game's 12th minute before BU answered with two goals in an 11-minute span midway through the first half. Sophomore forward Kelly Haslinger (Boston, N.Y.) tied the game on a well-executed 35-yard chip over the Georgetown keeper in the 26th minute. Then the Bearcats forged ahead 2-1 when senior midfielder Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y.) headed in a free kick from junior forward Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.) from the back post in the 37th minute.
Georgetown, which held a 16-5 margin in shots, tied the game on a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
The Bearcats conclude the tournament with a game against Navy at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
