Binghamton women's soccer wins home opener 1-0 in overtime against LIU

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton University junior forward Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J.) scored the first goal of the season for Binghamton (1-0-1) who defeated LIU (1-1-0) 1-0 in overtime. This was the home opener for the Bearcats who won in front of 245 fans.

In the first half the Blackbirds outshot Binghamton 5-0. Junior Goalkeeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) made several spectacular saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 in the first half.

In the second half the Bearcat offense awoke, attempting seven shots. However none of which went into the goal. Bowers again kept Binghamton in the game with a couple magnificent saves.

Just over two minutes into overtime White put a breakaway shot just over the top of the goal. Then with 90 seconds remaining in the first overtime sophomore Tricia Reed (Oswego, N.Y.) crossed the ball to junior forward Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y.), who shot the ball, it was deflected to the feet of White who put the ball in the back of the net to win the game for Binghamton.

"Obviously it is good to get a win under our belt," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "LIU is a good team and they showed it today. In the first half we made some mental errors but in the second half we started to take over the game. I was quite pleased the way we responded from the first half."

Bowers recorded six saves as well as her second shutout of the season

The Bearcats will take on Syracuse on Thursday at 7 p.m.

NOTE: This is the first time since the 1997 season where Binghamton has shutout both of its opponents in the first two games of the season. This is also the longest it has taken Binghamton to score a goal to start a season since 1988 where they did not score till their third game.
