ORONO, Maine--Host Maine (5-6-3, 3-2-1 AE) scored twice in a 3:21 span early in the second half to defeat Binghamton (2-10-3, 1-4-1, AE) 2-0 in an America East women's soccer game Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears broke a scoreless deadlock in the 55th minute off a corner kick and added an insurance goal less than four minutes later on a scramble in front of the Binghamton goal. The loss was a blow to Binghamton's playoff chances. The Bearcats have two games remaining and are seeking one of six berths to the America East Championship tournament.
"It's a disappointing result," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We played hard but weren't able to capitalize on a couple of really good chances. It was a good battle. We're still in the hunt but we have to win Thursday."
The teams were even in shots, 10-10. Binghamton peppered Maine with eight shots in the final 45 minutes but couldn't break through.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jen McEachron (Deer Park, N.Y.) made three saves in her second straight start.
Binghamton hosts UMBC Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
