Immediate Release: December 1, 2009 VESTAL, N.Y. - On the heels of a highly successful conference runnerup season, Binghamton women's soccer was cited Monday for its academic achievement. The Bearcats received the national honor from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for producing a team grade-point average of 3.08. It marks the sixth time in seven years that the BU women have earned the award. "Its nice to see our team be recognized not only for their successes on the field but for their hard work and diligence in the classroom; thats what being a student-athlete at Binghamton is all about," head coach Sarah McClellan said. The BU men and women were joined by New Hampshire as the only America East schools to have both men's and women's soccer teams achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. A total of 97 NCAA soccer-playing schools (out of nearly 800) had both its men's and women's teams receive the academic honor, putting BU among the elite 13%. Binghamton was regular season runnerup in the nine-team America East with its best conference win percentage in eight seasons of America East play (6-2, .750). The Bearcats advanced to the postseason for the sixth straight year and reached the championship game for the first time since winning the crown in 2004. Binghamton (9-7-2) started four freshmen and seven underclassmen. |
