women's soccer lands four highly-touted scholastic recruits
"This class is top quality," McClellan said. "All four are extremely talented individuals and strong team players. They understand the importance of team and are supremely competitive. The are great additions to our returning squad. Connie, Em, Alyssa and Gaby are talented athletes, hard workers and really quality people; thjey bring a high level of soccer intellect, a strong commitment as students and leadership experience."
Gormley is an all-state center back who was a four-year starter at North Rockland High. She was a three-time all-section and all-league selection and was named the Journal News Player of the Year this past fall. She has vast state and regional ODP experience and was a member of the nationally-ranked Montclair Thunderbolts club team. Gormley also was a Super Y League National Camp selection. In school, she is a member of five honor societies, including the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.
"Connie is a terrific player; she comes from a celebrated Montclair Thunderbolt team," McClellan said. "She is soccer smart and very skilled and composed on the ball. I expect her to transition quickly into the collegiate game."
Nuss was a captain, team MVP and four-year center midfield standout for Jamesville-DeWitt High. She was named to the 2010 all-section, All-Central New York and all-state teams and also was selected to the Class A All-Star Team. Nuss was a four-year member of the New York West ODP team and plays club soccer for Empire United Syracuse, the two-time state cup champions. Her 2010 club also captured the U.S. Club National Championship. Outside of soccer, she was a three-time recipient of the Jamesville-DeWitt Youth Athletic Association Leadership Award and is an AP Scholar who is also in the National Honor Society and National French Hnoor Society.
"Emily is an exceptional student-athlete," McClellan said. "She has great athleticism and field vision in the midfield. Her work ethic and commitment will benefit her tremendously as a collegiate player. I anticipate Emily competing at this level right away."
Gutierrez is a two-time all-state keeper from Sachem East High. She twice earned Suffolk County Goalkeeper of the Year honors and was a first team all-state choice in 2010. Gutierrez was a captain and team MVP and also received All-Long Island accolades. She also played with club team Massapequa Storm. In school, she is a scholar-athlete and is a member of Student Government.
"Alyssa has tremendous work ethic and passion for the game," McClellan said. "A top-notch shot stopper, she is a thrilling and athletic keeper with the ability to keep a team in a game. I'm looking forward to her growth in the collegiate environment."
Gold is a captain, all-conference and all-county goalie from Westfield High (N.J.). She led her team to the state finals as a junior and compiled the most shutouts in the entire country. Gold has also captained her FC Premier Blaze club team.
"Gaby has very strong leadership skiils; she is the most communicative goalkeeper I've ever seen," McClellan said. "I love her ability to solve problems before they arise. Gaby's organization and presence in goal will go a long way at the next level."
The quartet joins a BU program that is just one year removed from advancing to the America East title game and has made the conference tournament semifinals in three of the last four years. The 2010 Bearcats came up one goal short of returning to the postseason for the seventh straight season.
"Our returning squad is working very hard this spring and is wholeheartedly committed to our team goals for the upcoming fall," McClellan said. "The 2011 class will mesh with the team right away as we look forward to the 2011 season with high expectations."
