Local standout leads Bearcats to 4-2 victory over St. Peter's

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman forward Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) scored her first two collegiate goals and Binghamton (4-1) defeated visiting St. Peter's (0-4) 4-2 in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at West Gym Field.

"St. Peter's kept fighting and battled hard throughout the game," BU head coach Jeff Leightman said. "There was a period of time when they were winning every battle, and that led to both of their goals. We have to sort out the mistakes that we made because good teams will punish those errors."

The game was tied 2-2 at halftime despite the Bearcats outshooting the Peahens 9-5 and holding a 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the opening period. Freshman Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J.) opened the scoring just 10:56 into the game when she took a cross from graduate forward Irene Morales (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and found the corner of the net for her third goal of the season. At the 29:06 mark of the half Burnham scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from senior forward Tracy Kasmarcik (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley).

St. Peter's battled back to even the score, however, netting a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of the half. Freshman forward Jackie Chikosky (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) scored an unassisted goal at 37:50 when she beat the keeper in front of the net. With just one minute remaining in the period, Chikosky crossed in front of the net and fed classmate Laura Gubitosa (Ironia, N.J./Randolph).

The Bearcats then controlled play in the second half, taking the lead just over four minutes into the period and adding an insurance goal with just under 10 minutes remaining. Binghamton held a 12-0 shot advantage in the second half and outshot their visitors 21-5 for the game. Junior midfielder Caitlin O'Shaughnessy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) scored the go-ahead goal at the 49:16 mark, taking a pass from junior midfielder Deli Plourde (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and finding the corner of the net from 10 yards out. Burnham provided the insurance goal at 80:18 on a fastbreak, scoring off passes from White and junior back Tatiana Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y./Saddle River Day School (N.J.).

"Kelly is coming along nicely," Leightman said. "She did well today competing in the box and found that taking physical risks led to her getting good scoring chances."

Freshman goalkeeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) played the entire game in goal for her fourth win of the season and grabbed two saves. Her St. Peter's counterpart was freshman Andrea Kovalcik (Clifton, N.J.), who had eight saves.

Binghamton is back in action on the road Sunday when the Bearcats take on Navy at 4 p.m.
