|BU women's soccer blanks St. John's 2-0|
VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton (2-1) scored once in each half and defeated visiting St. John's (0-3) 2-0 in a women's soccer match Friday afternoon at West Gym Field. The win over the defending ECAC champions was Binghamton's second in three meetings with the Red Storm since 2001.
"Im very pleased to beat a quality team such as St. Johns," BU head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We are starting to play with confidence and are also getting healthy. Our freshman are beginning to play at a collegiate pace and are gaining confidence. I hope we can just keep it going."
Freshman midfielder Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J.) opened the scoring in the 30th minute, netting her second goal of the young season. The Bearcats took a corner kick, and after the ensuing scramble, freshman forward Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) tapped the ball back to White, who buried the short-range shot into the upper left corner.
With the Bearcats clinging to the 1-0 lead, senior striker Tracy Kasmarcik (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) mopped up the remains from White's work in the 70th minute. White broke down the right side and struck a shot that banked off the far post. The rebound came directly to Kasmarcik, who tapped it in the open net for her second goal of the season.
Earlier in the game, Kasmarcik was stopped on a penalty shot by St. John's keeper Gabriela Franco.
Freshman keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded 15 saves for her second straight shutout. Each team had 23 shots.
Binghamton will host St. Bonaventure Sunday at 2 p.m.
