BU women's soccer blanks St. Joseph's 2-0 on pair of second-half goals

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton women's soccer snapped a scoreless tie with two second-half goals and blanked visiting St. Joseph's 2-0 Friday night in front of 567 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Junior midfielder Brittany Walsh completed a pretty passing play in the 54th minute by blasting a right-footed shot past the Hawks keeper for the first goal. Senior midfielder Taylor Kucharski took a toe pass in traffic from senior forward AnnMarie Rizzi and one-timed a through ball to an overlapping Walsh, who buried a hard shot to the right side of the net for her first tally of the season.

Then with 3:18 remaining in the game, junior forward Candice Rowland sent a diagonal ball inside the box, where a streaking Kaitlyn Martin beat the rushing keeper to the ball and cut it back into the empty net from 16 yards out on the right. It was Rowland's second assist in as many games and Martin's first collegiate goal.

"We've been working on getting the ball forward and being more dangerous going straight to goal," head coach Sarah McClellan said of her team's improved attack. "It was a great effort by the whole team tonight. We hung together and stayed connected. We used a lot of players and everyone contributed. I couldn't be more proud."

Sophomore keeper Carrie Martin made two saves for her second shutout of the season. Martin had a close call with 11:36 left and BU clinging to a 1-0 lead. A bouncing ball eluded her and landed at the far post, where a St. Joseph's player hit the post from a tight angle at the doorstep.

Junior right wing back Meghan Campbell was named the America East Player of the Game.

Martin, Campbell and the back line were steady again in notching the team's second consecutive shutout. Binghamton has surrendered just one goal in 283 minutes of play this season.

Binghamton travels to Olean to face St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon.
