Mathelier selected to women's soccer all-region team

Binghamton University women's soccer defender Tatiana Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y./Saddle River Day, N.J.) has been named to the NSCAA/adidas Northeast Region third team, the school learned today. Mathelier joins 33 other athletes on the all-region teams, which are selected by head coaches. The Northeast region, one of six NSCAA regions across the country, is comprised of 41 schools.

Mathelier anchored a Bearcats back line that produced seven shutouts and a 1.79 goals against average in 2003. A forward in her first two collegiate seasons, Mathelier added the game-winning goal against Stony Brook and chipped in two assists. Binghamton (9-8-2) advanced to the ECAC tournament after securing the program's 17th consecutive winning season.

"Tatiana had a tremendous year and has blossomed into the player we knew she could be," head coach Leff Leightman said. "It's not easy to make the transition when you've played forward all your life, and she has taken the challenge and risen past all expectations. I think it's great to see that the coaches are aware of how much talent Tatiana has as a player. They have rewarded her for her hard work and dedication, and the honor is very well deserved. It means a lot to her and our program."

NOTES
