BU women's soccer falls 2-1 at New Hampshire on two late goals

DURHAM, N.H. -- Host New Hampshire (5-4-1, 1-0 AE) scored twice in a span of 4:27 late in the second half to grab a 2-1 win over Binghamton (1-7-2, 0-1 AE) in the America East opener for both teams Sunday afternoon.

The Bearcats had staked themselves to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when senior forward Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.) ripped a 30-yard shot into the top netting. Povill took a pass from freshman midfielder Casey Pedersen (Northville, Mich.) and notched her second goal of the season.

New Hampshire, which outshot BU 23-18, tied the game at the 73:05 mark and then scored the winner shortly thereafter on a long shot.

"It's incredibly disappointing," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "But I'm proud of our effort. I thought we controlled long stetches of the game but unfortunately we didn't get the result we wanted. We played pretty well in the first half and then weathered the storm early in the second. We created a lot of chances, including a handful of breakaways, that could've extended our lead. But we couldn't conver that second goal."

Binghamton returns home to host Vermont Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
