Binghamton women's soccer defeats Virginia Military Institute 3-0

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. - Binghamton women's soccer (4-1-1) defeated Virginia Military Institute (0-3) 3-0 in the first of two games at the Youngstown State on Friday evening at Stambaugh Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Tricia Reed (Oswego, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season in the 54th minute. She was assisted by junior midfielder Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y.) and freshman forward Kelly Haslinger (Boston, N.Y.). In the 65th minute senior midfielder Lauren Massey (Burlington, Ontario) also scored her first goal of the season on an assist from sophomore linemate Kerry O'Shaughnessy (Stony Point, N.Y.). Senior midfielder Kristin McCann (Endwell, N.Y.) scored her first goal as a Bearcat in the 74th minute, she was assisted by freshman midfielder Kimberly Thomas (Stony Point, N.Y.).

"We did not look good in the first half, we played better in the second half," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "Virginia Military Institute came out hard. It took some adjustment to overcome their intensity."

Junior keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.), the reigning America East Player of the Week, made three saves, she combined with classmate keeper Kristy Doerner (Shoreham, N.Y.) to record the shutout.

Binghamton is scheduled to take on Manhattan on Sunday at 11 a.m. in their second game of the Youngstown State Classic
