Men's swimming and diving tops St. Bonaventure
Bearcat men record first win over Bonnies 141.5-101.5, Women fall 165-75

FINAL RESULTS

OLEAN, N.Y. -- For the second consecutive meet, senior swimmer David Holmes was a triple-event winner, propelling Binghamton men's swimming to its first-ever victory over a strong St. Bonaventure program, 141.5-101.5, on Saturday at Reilly Center Pool. The Bearcat women fell short falling to the Bonnie women by a score of 165-75.

"This was our biggest dual meet victory of the season so far for the men's team," said head coach Sean Clark. "We matched up well against them and had to swim tough to get the places we needed. Our big horses pulled us through another close one."

olmes set a pair of pool records taking home top honors in both the 200 fly (1:52.42) and 500 free (1:52.42). He also claimed gold in the 1,000 free clocking in at 9:53.79. For the second consecutive meet, senior Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) and sophomore Brenno Varanda (St.Petersburg, Fla.) were double-event winners for the Bearcats. Koizim won both the 50 free (21.57) and 200 backstroke (1:56.72), while Varanda took both the 200 IM (1:55.57) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.79).

On the boards, sophomore Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) captured both the 1- and 3-meter competitions with 263.32 and 301.10 points, respectively.

The victory moves the men's record to 6-2 in dual meets on the season.

On the women's side, sophomore Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) earned a second place finish in the 50 free in 26.28, while junior Nicole Sweeney (Commack, N.Y.). finished third in the 500 free touching in 5:31.17.

Sophomore diver Kate Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) took second on the 3-meter board totaling 207.23 points. With 189.52 points in the 1-meter compeition, freshman Anne Malvasi (Liverpool, N.Y.) also grabbed runnerup honors.

"Our women are a bit tired and are definitely looking forward to the Conference meet now," said Clark. "With one last tune-up left at Colgate, we'll start to see the rewards from the hard work we did all year."

The Bearcat men and women return to the the waters at Colgate this Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. for a tri meet with the Raiders and a very strong UMASS program.
