Swimming and Diving swept by visiting Cornell
Final Meet Results
N.Y. - The Binghamton mens and womens swimming and
diving teams fell to Cornell on Saturday afternoon in their final
meet of the semester at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
The Bearcat men (2-2) were bested by a very strong Big Red contingent,
175-122, while the women (1-4) lost by a score of 191-108.
"We swam with class," head coach Sean Clark said. "I
liked the way we attacked the water. Cornell's program is a bit
ahead of ours, but we stood up and really pushed them to swim
Sophomore Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) paced
the men's efforts, touching first in both the 100-yard (1:00.44)
and 200-yard (2:09.44) breaststroke events.
Seniors David Holmes (Doncaster, England) and Brian
Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) also recorded individual victories
for the Bearcats. Holmes won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.72
while Koizim touched first in the 100-yard backstroke clocking
in at 51.74. Holmes also set a team record in the 1,000-yard
freestyle finishing in second, just two-tenths of a second off
the lead with a time of 9:35.48.
On the women's side, BU swept both diving events as freshman
Anne Malvasi (Liverpool, N.Y.) took top honors in the
1-meter dive with an ECAC qualifying score of 239.18 and sophomore
Katherine Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) won the three-meter
dive with 238.05 points.
Sophomore Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) captured
the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.63 while Nicole
Sweeney (Commack, N.Y.) clocked in at 11:16.28 in the 1000-yard
freestyle for a second-place finish.
teams are now off until January 13 when they head to Drexel for
a 2 p.m. dual meet.
Notes: Over 50 BU swimming and diving alumni were in the
stands cheering on the Bearcats as part of the program's alumni
weekend festivities...BU established 10 individual personal best
times on the afternoon (Men: 7, Women: 3)...Cornell's men are
now a perfect 6-0 on the season.
