Edelman named America East Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year

VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman Anna Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y.) concluded her impressive women's tennis campaign by being named the America East Conference Rookie of the Year. Also earning all-conference honors for Binghamton were fellow freshman Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Yulia Smirnova (Great Neck, N.Y.) as well as sophomores Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.).

Edelman was also named first-team all-conference at No. 1 doubles and second team all-conference at No. 1 singles. She went 24-7 in singles play this year, including 14-4 in dual matches. In doubles action, she was 29-4. Last fall, Edelman advanced to the third round of the ITA East Regional Championships in singles play. She and Bates are currently ranked No. 15 in doubles play in the ITA East Region.

"This is a well-deserved honor for Anna," head coach Mike Stevens said. "She had a spectacular year, especially for a freshman. She performed great last fall at the ITA East Regional and was part of a very good doubles team with Lauren Bates. In the spring, she did a fantastic job at No. 1 singles."

Bates, who also earned first-team all-conference honors at No. 1 doubles, received second-team honors at No. 2 singles. She went 26-7 in singles play, including 13-5 in dual matches. In doubles action, she was 28-3.

Smirnova earned first-team all-conference honors. She was 22-7 in singles play, including a 15-4 mark in dual matches. She won all three of her matches at last weekend's America East Championships.

In doubles play, Smirnova and Shapiro earned second-team honors at the No. 3 slot. Smirnova went 18-10 while Shapiro went 19-8.

Rosenblum earned second-team honors at No. 5 singles. She went 10-10 but won both of her completed matches at the America East Championships.

Binghamton finished the 2007-08 season 13-6 and was the America East Conference runner up for the third time in four season. All five all-conference selections will return for the 2008-09 campaign.

"I am very proud of what our team was able to accomplish this season," Stevens said. "It was a young team and we look forward to taking the program to the next level."
