named America East Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year
VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman Anna
Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y.) concluded her impressive women's
tennis campaign by being named the America East Conference Rookie
of the Year. Also earning all-conference honors for Binghamton
were fellow freshman Lauren
Bates (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Yulia
Smirnova (Great Neck, N.Y.) as well as sophomores Danyelle
Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Erica
Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.).
Edelman was also named first-team all-conference at No. 1 doubles
and second team all-conference at No. 1 singles. She went 24-7
in singles play this year, including 14-4 in dual matches. In
doubles action, she was 29-4. Last fall, Edelman advanced to
the third round of the ITA East Regional Championships in singles
play. She and Bates are currently ranked No. 15 in doubles play
in the ITA East Region.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Anna," head coach
Mike Stevens said. "She had a spectacular year, especially
for a freshman. She performed great last fall at the ITA East
Regional and was part of a very good doubles team with Lauren
Bates. In the spring, she did a fantastic job at No. 1 singles."
Bates, who also earned first-team all-conference honors at No.
1 doubles, received second-team honors at No. 2 singles. She
went 26-7 in singles play, including 13-5 in dual matches. In
doubles action, she was 28-3.
Smirnova earned first-team all-conference honors. She was 22-7
in singles play, including a 15-4 mark in dual matches. She won
all three of her matches at last weekend's America East Championships.
In doubles play, Smirnova and Shapiro earned second-team honors
at the No. 3 slot. Smirnova went 18-10 while Shapiro went 19-8.
Rosenblum earned second-team honors at No. 5 singles. She went
10-10 but won both of her completed matches at the America East
Binghamton finished the 2007-08 season 13-6 and was the America
East Conference runner up for the third time in four season.
All five all-conference selections will return for the 2008-09
"I am very proud of what our team was able to accomplish
this season," Stevens said. "It was a young team and
we look forward to taking the program to the next level."
