Binghamton women's tennis defeats Hartford in AE first round, will face UMBC in semifinals

STORRS, CONN.-The No. 2 Binghamton women's tennis team (15-5) defeated No. 7 Hartford 4-0 in the first round of the America East Conference Championships on Friday morning at the Connecticut Tennis Center. The No. 2 Bearcats now advance to face No. 3 UMBC in the semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Vera Popova (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as well as freshman Alyssa Freeman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) each won their singles and doubles matches against the Hawks. Binghamton was winning the other three singles matches as well but the competition ended when the Bearcats clinched the decisive fourth point.

"We played well today," head coach Mike Stevens said. "UMBC is going to be close match tommorrow. We beat them earlier in the season but they have improved since then."
