Binghamton women's tennis defeats UMBC 4-2 to advance to America East Finals

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--Juniors Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman Nicole Scarangella (Massapequa, N.Y.) all won their singles and doubles matches, leading Binghamton to a 4-2 win over UMBC in the America East Conference Women's Tennis semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats advance to the finals for the second year in a row and third time in the past four years, where they will meet 11-time defending champion Boston on Sunday at 9 a.m.

"We had some great comebacks today and are looking forward to (the finals) tommorow," head coach Mike Stevens said. "UMBC was a tough team to play."

Kushnirovich and Scarangella fought off two match points at No. 3 doubles to defeat Pascaline Cette and Debra Defosna to win 9-7. With UMBC's win at first doubles and Altinay and freshman Juliana Umeki (Mogi des Cruises, Brazil) defeating Joy Adewumi and Elizabeth Anderson 8-4 at second doubles, the rally at third doubles nailed down the doubles point for the Bearcats.

Scarangella downed Fonseca 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 6 singles while Kushnirovich came from behind at No. 3 singles to defeat Anderson 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. It was Altinay, however, who pulled off the clinching victory with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Cornelia Carapcea at No. 2 singles.
