named America East Women's Tennis Coach of the Year
Complete All-Conference Teams
VESTAL, N.Y.--For the third time in his six years at the helm
of the Binghamton women's tennis program, Mike Stevens
has been named the America East Conference Coach of the Year.
In addition, five Bearcat players received all-conference honors
and all three doubles teams also earned accolades.
Stevens, who was also the America East Coach of the Year in 2005
and 2006, led Binghamton to its fourth runner up finish at the
conference tournament in the past five seasons. The Bearcats
won a school-record 17 dual matches this season and have gone
76-36 since Stevens took over the program in 2003.
Sophomore Yulia Smirnova earned a pair of first team all-conference
selections. At No. 3 singles, she went 22-5 overall, including
a team-best 18-2 in dual matches. Smirnova and freshman Emma
Leibowicz earned first-team honors at No. 2 doubles.
Also earned first-team honors was freshman Yagmur Gone
at No. 5 singles. She went 12-7 overall but was 11-5 in dual
Freshman Jillian Santos and sophomore Lauren Bates
both earned a pair of second team selections. At No. 1 doubles,
the duo went 10-2 in dual matches. In singles play, Bates was
22-10 at No. 1 position while Santos was 23-9 at the No. 2 slot.
At No. 4 singles, freshman Marina Bykovskaya was named
second-team all-conference. She joined the squad in January and
went 12-8 in dual matches. Bykovskaya and junior Danyelle
Shapiro were also named second-team all-conference at No.
Binghamton finished the 2008-09 season 17-4.
