Bearcats
advance to America East Championship match with 4-0 win over
New Hampshire NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Second-seeded Binghamton (16-7) continued its remarkable spring season with a 4-0 victory over third-seeded New Hampshire Saturday in the America East semifinals. The Bearcats, who have now won 13 straight matches, advance to Sunday's noon championship match against top-seeded and 12-time champion Boston University. Weather permitting, the match will be contested outdoors at the Connecticut Tennis Center. "We're fired up," head coach Jamie Campbell said. "Now the girls have one more match to win." In an indoor match that was over in less than two hours, BU won in straight sets at the first four singles positions to clinch the win. The two remaining singles matches were halted and the doubles matches were cancelled as Binghamton had already secured the victory. It was the second straight 4-0 win at the conference tournament for the Bearcats, who extended their school-record win streak in the process. On Friday, BU blanked Albany 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Against the Wildcats, freshman number one player Justina Hakimi (Manhasset, N.Y./Herricks) posted a 6-3, 7-5 win, and junior Janine Sadaka (Great Neck, N.Y.) steamrolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2. Senior captain Amy Weissberg (Syosset, N.Y.) scored a 6-3, 6-1 win at the third spot, and sophomore Alexis Brill (Syosset, N.Y.) earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles. "Justina and Amy played well, and Janine was dominant. Alexis had a hard-fought match, with a lot of deuce games. She just wouldn't let up." As for the task of facing a daunting Boston University squad, Campbell was nonetheless optimistic. "I think we'll play even better tomorrow. We need to play hard, have fun and stay loose. The players are so excited, and they deserve it. We have nothing to lose. We've met our seed, and the only expectations are those we place on ourselves." |
