Women's tennis defeated by Boston 4-2 in America East Finals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Binghamton's impressive 2007-08 women's tennis season came to a close with a 4-2 loss to Boston in the America East Tournament finals on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats end their season 13-6 and are the conference runner up for the third time in four seasons. The Terriers, meanwhile, are the champions for the 15th consecutive season.

In doubles play, the Bearcats used a pair of tiebreakers to take the point. Freshmen Anna Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y.) won 9-8 (6-2) at first doubles against Francine Whu and Vanessa Steiner. At third doubles, freshman Yulia Smirnova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) outlasted Laura Stiekema and Elizabeth Corrao 9-8 (7-4).

Boston rebounded in singles play, taking of the five completed singles matches. Whu got even against Edelman with a 7-5, 6-3 win at first singles while Steiner rallied to defeat Bates 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 at second singles.

Smirnova came back to defeat Yana Sadovskaya 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at third singles. In the process, she captured her third consecutive singles match in as many days.

It was a pair of sweeps in the bottom half of singles play, however, which gave Boston the decisive advantage.

The America East will announce its all-conference teams later in the week.

NOTES: Binghamton completes its fourth consecutive winning season. The Bearcats have gone 54-21 during that span, including 20-4 against America East opponents ... Edelman and Bates, who are currently ranked No. 15 in doubles play, conclude their season with a 28-3 record. Edelman also finished 24-7 in singles action while Bates went 26-7.
