Women's tennis ousted in America East semifinals with 4-2 loss to UMBC

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--After a stellar regular season, the Binghamton women's tennis team (14-3) had its postseason come to an abrupt end with a 4-2 loss to UMBC in the America East Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Yale Tennis Center. The setback denies the Bearcats a third straight appearance in the America East Conference Tournament finals.

UMBC set the tone early, by winning two of the three doubles matches to take the opening point. Senior Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) and freshman Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.) won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles but the Retreivers won 8-5 at first doubles and 8-4 at third doubles. Rosenblum went on to beat Barbara Couto 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

Senior Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won her 85th career match, posting a 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 2 slot over Joy Adewumi. UMBC, however, swept singles positions 3-5 to take the match. The clincher was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win by Cornelia Carapcea over freshman Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) at fourth singles.

Altinay was leading her match against Alice Chen at first singles when UMBC clinched the win.

NOTES: Altinay finishes her career with a school record 86 singles victories and 71 doubles win. Kushnirovich completes her career second in both categories (85 and 70).
