Women's tennis advances to AE Finals with 4-3 win over UMBC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshmen Anna Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y.) each won their singles and doubles matches, leading No. 3 Binghamton to a 4-3 win over No. 2 UMBC in the America East Conference semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Yale Tennis Center. The Bearcats advance to the championship round for the third time in four years and will face No. 1 Boston on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Edelman and Bates defeated Pascaline Cette and Alice Chen 8-4 at first doubles. The Retrievers, however, won the other two doubles matches to take the point.

In singles play, the Bearcats swept the top three flights. Edelman was leading Ana Mungo 6-1 at first singles before Mungo retired, Bates won 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 over Chen at second singles while fellow freshman Yulia Smirnova (Great Neck, N.Y.) won 6-2, 2-6 over 6-4 over Pascaline Cette at third singles.

Sophomore Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.) won at fifth singles 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 over Joy Adawami to clinch the match.
