Binghamton women's tennis defeats Stony Brook 4-1 in America East semifinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Freshman Jillian Santos and sophomore Lauren Bates each won their singles and doubles matches, leading second-seeded Binghamton (17-3) to a 4-1 over third-seeded Stony Brook in the America East semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Yale University. The Bearcats face top-seeded Boston University in the finals on Sunday at 11 a.m., marking the fifth time in the past seven seasons the two programs have squared off for the title.

In addition to advancing to the championship round, Binghamton set the school record with its 17th dual match victory of the season. The 2004-05 squad held the previous mark of 16 wins.

Against Stony Brook on Saturday, Bates and Santos were down 5-0 at first doubles against Gayatri Krishnan and Anna Pieschl. The Bearcat duo, however, stormed back for an 8-6 triumph.

In singles play, Bates knocked off Katherine Hanson 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 slot while Santos recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Prerana Appineni at the No. 2 position. Also victorious for Binghamton was sophomore Yulia Smirnova, who downed Paola Rodolfi 6-1, 6-2 at third singles.
