Binghamton women's tennis defeats UMBC 4-2 in AE semifinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn-- Sophomore Emma Leibowicz and junior Yulia Smirnova each won their singles and doubles matches, leading top-seeded Binghamton (15-2) to a 4-2 win over No. 4 UMBC (15-8) in an America East women's tennis semifinal match on Saturday afternoon at Yale Univerisity. With the win, the Bearcats advance to their third consecutive conference final and will face defending champion Boston on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Leibowicz defeated Barbara Couto 6-2, 6-4 at sixth singles. She also joined junior Lauren Bates for an 8-4 win over Carmen Jackman and Emily Mannix at second doubles.

Smirnova, meanwhile, downed Mannix 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles. She also teamed with sophomore Jillian Santos for a an 8-5 win over Couto and Lorena Valente at third doubles.

With Binghamton clinging to a 3-2 lead with two singles matches remaining, junior Anna Edelman clinched the win with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind win over Jackman.
