named America East Women's Tennis Coach of the Year
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Seventh-year
head coach Mike Stevens has been named the America East Women's
Tennis Coach of the Year, highlighting Binghamton's strong showing
on the America East All-Conference Teams. The Bearcats had five
singles players honored by the conference and swept all three
first-team doubles selections.
Stevens, who since 2003-04 has led the Bearcats to a 119-38 dual
match record, steered the squad to its fifth appearance in the
America East finals since he took over the program. In addition,
he guided Binghamton to its best start in program history (7-0)
and its first-ever ITA National Rankings (No. 74 on Feb. 23 and
No. 68 on March 2). This marks the fourth time in the last six
years Stevens has been named the America East Coach of the Year.
Edelman was named first-team all-conference at both No. 2
singles and No. 1 doubles. In singles play, she was ranked nationally
by the ITA for several weeks during the season (most recently
at No. 120 during the week of April 23). At the America East
tournament, Edelman won both of her singles matches and ended
the year with a 15-2 record in dual matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Edelman and sophomore Marina
Bykovskaya were named the top doubles team, having gone 14-1
as a duo in dual matches during the season.
Bates, who was named the America East Player of the Week
a program record four times this season, was tabbed second-team
all-conference at first singles. She went 14-3 in dual matches
during the season and became the third player in program history
to reach the 70-win mark for her career.
Bates and sophomore Emma
Leibowicz were the top team at No. 2 doubles. The duo won
its last six matches of the season, including both contests at
the America East Tournament. At No. 6 singles, Leibowicz was
named second-team all-conference, having posted a 7-4 record
since stepping into the lineup midway through the spring.
Santos and junior Yulia
Smirnova earned first-team honors at No. 3 doubles. In addition,
Santos was named to the second team at No. 3 singles while Smirnova
was also selected to the second team at No. 4 singles. Both players
went 13-5 in singles dual contests during the season and each
of them won a match at the America East Tournament.
Binghamton finished the season with a record of 15-3.
