Edelman, McGovern headline America East awards
Five Bearcats collect America East All-Conference distinction

America East Release

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Five members of the Binghamton University women's tennis team garnered America East All-Conference accolades, highlighted by the conference's Player of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year awards. Senior Anna Edelman, the 2008 America East Rookie of the Year, earned the women's Player of the Year honor while head coach Libby McGovern and assistant coach Rick Heichemer comprised the league's Coaching Staff of the Year.

Edelman earned the conference's top player award on the strength of a 16-5 dual match record at No. 1 singles this spring. A three-time all-conference honoree, Edelman swept both of her singles matches at the America East Tournament, including a victory over Boston University's two-time America East Player of the Year Stefanie Nunic. Ranked No. 2 in the ITA Northeast Region, she took home first-team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles competition. During the fall portion of the season, the senior standout posted 18 wins in tournament play, highlighted by the A Singles crown in the USTA National Tennis Center Invitational and a runner-up finish at the ITA East Regional Championships. Edelman set the program's single-season wins record with 34, shattering the old mark of 30 set by Zeynep Altinay in the 2004-05 campaign.

In her first season with the Bearcats, head coach Libby McGovern led Binghamton to the top seed in the America East tournament and the program's seventh runner-up performance in the last nine seasons. The Bearcats defeated all five America East opponents in the regular-season before a 4-3 setback to 17-time defending champion Boston in the America East Championship match.

Edelman was one of two Bearcats to achieve first-team all-conference honors in singles play. Classmate Lauren Bates grabbed first-team honors at No. 2 singles. Bates concluded her collegiate career in second place on Binghamton's all-time singles and doubles wins list with 88 and 81, respectively. The tandem of Bates and Edelman also earned first-team accolades at the No. 1 doubles spot.

BU dominated the second-team singles selections with three players appearing on the all-conference list. Junior Jillian Santos earned second-team all-conference distinction at the No. 3 singles spot. Santos racked up a 25-11 overall singles record, including a 14-7 mark in dual matches. Senior Yulia Smirnova also garnered second-team honors after posting a 22-12 overall record, 13-7 in dual matches. Smirnova won all four of her matches at the America East Championship. She ended her stellar career as BU's all-time leader in singles and doubles wins with 89 and 84, respectively. Santos and Smirnova also earned first-team all-conference honors at No. 2 doubles. The pair registered a 12-6 mark at the second doubles slot this season.

Junior Marina Bykovskaya was a second-team all-conference honoree at fifth singles. Bykovskaya recorded a 21-13 overall singles record, including a 12-8 mark in dual matches.
