Dobrin and Altinay sweep America East Weekly Tennis honors

VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman Alex Dobrin (Flushing, N.Y.) and sophomore Zeynep Altinay (Antalya, Turkey) have been named the America East Men’s and Women’s Tennis Performers of the Week. The awards were announced Tuesday (April 26).

Dobrin, Binghamton’s No. 3 singles player, rolled a straight-set win over his opponent from Bucknell for his 11th consecutive singles victory and 16th win in his last 17 matches. He enters the America East Championship with a team-best 20-3 dual match record. Also playing No. 2 doubles, Dobrin scored a win over Bucknell, lifting his doubles mark to 18-7 overall. Binghamton, 19-5 overall, has set a school wins mark and tied a program record with 10 consecutive matches heading the America East Championship, where they will be looking for the program’s third consecutive conference crown.

Altinay has now earned the weekly honors three times this season. She helped won both her doubles and singles match as Binghamton pulled out a 4-3 win over a 15-5 Bucknell squad this past Tuesday. Altinay and freshman Alyssa Freeman clinched the doubles point for Binghamton with their 8-6 come-form-behind win over Chelsea Mills and Tayna Sichko at No. 2. She then scored a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Nicole Curcic. In the Bearcats' regular-season finale against Albany last Wednesday, Altinay defeated Courtney Michels 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to improve her record to 28-4 for the season. It was also her 14th consecutive victory.

Both tennis teams head to the America East Conference Championships this weekend at the University of Connecticut. The men's team is the two-time defending conference champions while the women finished second in 2003 and tied for third last season.
