Women's tennis loses close match to Army, 4-3
WEST POINT, N.Y.-- Army (2-0) defeated Binghamton (1-1) in a tight 4-3 match in women's tennis at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Friday night. This was the first of 17 dual meets for the Bearcats this spring.
The Bearcats won the top three singles matches but Army claimed the victory by taking singles matches four through six along with the doubles point.
Freshman Anna Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y.) had another solid outing for the Bearcats, increasing her season singles record to 11-2 by defeating Anne Houghton 6-3, 7-5 in first singles.
Freshman Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y.) won the second singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Kristin Beehler to move to 13-1 and freshman Yulia Smirnova (Moscow, Russia) won the third singles match 6-1, 7-5 over Diana Alquero to move to 9-1 on the year.
"This was a good college match that went down to the wire," said fifth-year head coach Mike Stevens. "It was a good team effort and we are looking forward to Rutgers tomorrow."
Edelman and Bates continued their solid play at doubles, winning their match 8-3, but the Black Knights took the next two doubles matches to claim the point. Edelman and Bates won the A Doubles Championship last week at the Cornell Winter Invitational.
