Binghamton women's tennis rallies for 4-3 win at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y.-- Freshman Marina Bykovskaya won the clinching match at fourth singles, capping the Binghamton women's tennis team's 4-3 come-from-behind win over Army on Sunday afternoon at West Point. The win concluded a 2-0 weekend for the Bearcats (4-1).

"This was a good win for our program," head coach Mike Stevens said. "Army is always a very strong and talented team so this is a good step in the right direction for us.

After dropping the doubles point, Binghamton had to win four of the six singles matches to lock up the victory. At third singles, sophomore Yulia Smirnova knocked off Caitlin Finnegan 7-6 (1), 6-3. Freshman Basak Gone won 6-3, 7-5 at fifth singles against Annie Hang while junior Danyelle Shapiro took a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Audrey Hansen at No. 6 singles.

With Army having won at both first and second singles, the match came down to Marina Bykovskaya. She lost the first set of her match against Charlee Warford 6-7 (4) but regrouped to take the last two sets 6-3, 6-2.

Earlier in the day, Shapiro and sophomore Lauren Bates defeated Sarah Giles-Madden and Bridie Burke 8-5 at third doubles.

Binghamton is off until heading to Cornell on Feb. 20 for a 5 p.m. match.
