Bearcats sweep seven matches in final day of Binghamton Women's Tennis Invitational

VESTAL, N.Y.- Seniors Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) and Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued their assualt on the school record book, highlighting play on the second and final day of the Binghamton Women's Tennis Invitational. With Colgate having played their scheduled matches on Saturday night, due to the impending weather forecast, the Bearcats wrapped up the round-robin event by sweeping five singles matches and a pair of doubles contests against Albany on Sunday.

"We came better prepared today than we did yesterday," head coach Mike Stevens said. "Both Albany and Colgate were good tests for us to see where we are right now. We still have a lot of work to be a contender for the (America East) conference title but we played some solid tennis this weekend."

Altinay won her school-record 72nd career singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Christina Suarez. In doubles play, she joined freshman Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.) to defeat Kim Weltman and Kim Westcott 8-3. Rosenblum also won her singles match against Westcott 6-0, 6-0.

Kushnirovich, meanwhile, won her 70th career singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Weltman. In the process, she moved into sole possession of second place all time. Kushnirovich surpassed Lisa Denerstein, who won 69 career singles matches from 1988-92. In doubles action, Kushnirocich and junior Jenn Naegeli (Putman Valley, N.Y.) took an 8-3 decision from the tandem of Suarez and Amanda Hall.

Also victorious in singles play were sophomore Juliana Umeki (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil), who defeated Hall 6-4, 6-1, and freshman Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.), who beat Aimee Kern 6-3, 6-2.

Kushnirovich and Shapiro are now both 5-0 in singles matches this season. In doubles play, Kushirovich and Rosenblum are 6-0 so far this season.

Binghamton won 20 of 23 matches during the two-day event.

The Bearcats head to Siena this coming Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. match.
