Altinay ties school record for career victories at first day of season-opening Bloomsburg Duals

BLOOMSBURG, Pa.-- Senior Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey) tied the school record for career wins and Binghamton won 14 out of 18 matches, highlighting the first day of the Bloomsburg Women's Tennis Duals. There are no teams scores being kept during the weekend.

Altinay's 6-0, 6-0 win over Iida Hokkanen of Bloomsburg at No. 2 singles gives her 69 career wins, tying the record set by Lisa Denerstein (1988-92). Altinay also teammed up with freshman Erica Rosenblum (Albany, N.Y.) to win 8-3 at No. 1 doubles against Candice Carlin and Carla Erskine of Villanova.

"It's great that Zeynep was able to tie such a significant record in her first match of the season," head coach Mike Stevens said. "It's even better to see that she is in good shape after suffering a lot of injuries last year."

Fellow senior Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the lone Binghamton player to win a pair of singles matches as well as her double match. She now has 67 career singles victories, just two shy of the mark Altinay and Denerstein currently share.

Sophomores Juliana Umeki (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil) and Gayarthri Balasundar (Syosset, N.Y.) as well as freshman Danyelle Shapiro (Boca Raton, Fla.) also won both their singles matches.

Binghamton concludes its stay at the Bloomsburg Duals on Sunday.
