Bearcats achieve early success at Brown Invitational over the weekend
Leibowicz and Hollander victorious in singles competition

Providence, R.I. -- Freshman Taylor Hollander and senior Emma Leibowicz both won their individual singles consolation finals' matches on Sunday against a loaded field at the Brown Invitational. Each team competing featured a 2010-11 record of over .500, including Boston College and Dartmouth who finished the season ranked 33rd and 50th in the nation respectively.

After an opening round defeat, Hollander bounced back with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rachel Saiontz of Princeton in the consolation semifinals of the fourth flight. In relatively easy fashion, Hollander defeated Rachel Decker-Sadowski of Dartmouth in straight sets to claim the consolation finals victory. In the sixth flight, Leibowicz defeated Amelia Martinez of Boston University in the consolation finals 6-1, 6-4.

Senior Jillian Santos also had a strong showing for the Bearcats. In a heartbreaking opening round loss to Katarina Gajic of Boston College, Santos bounced back immediately defeating Melissa Matsuoka of Dartmouth with a 6-3, 6-4 consolation semifinals win. Santos fell short of giving BU a third singles consolation champion by dropping to Cassandra Herzberg of Brown in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

"I'm pleased with how the team competed this weekend," head coach Libby McGovern said. "They had to sustain a very high level of play over the entire length of their matches and this challenge will be beneficial to us as the season progresses. The caliber of players at this tournament shows us the level of play that we need to achieve in order to be successful this season."

Instead of a flighted tournament for doubles action, the teams competed head-to-head this weekend. Binghamton fell to Princeton 3-1 in the opening round, tied 2-2 against America East foe Boston University in the consolation bracket and dropped four matches to Rutgers in the following round of consolation. Senior Basak Gone and freshman Taylor Hollander excelled with victories over Princeton 9-8 (7-0) and Boston University 8-4.

The Bearcats return to action at the USTA National Tennis Center Invitational October 8-10 in Flushing, NY.
